Research notes:
Some family stories and letters state that the family was from Kovno.
I believe that this was solely for identification purposes.
Shadeve is a small village in the province of Kovno.
The province would have been much more identifiable to outsiders that a
small shtetl such as Shadeve.
A number of Lithuanian documents confirm that the Fuksas home
town was Shadeve.
Are we Foxes or Fuchs?
We were most likely known as Fuchs (Fox) in Europe since they would have used a Germanic or Yiddish
pronunciation as opposed to any Anglicization (Fox).
Research shows a variety of spellings for Fuchs such as Fuks and
Fuksas. My maternal great uncle, Label Fuchs 1930 Lithuania death
certificate shows his family name as Fuksas and lists his father as
Shmuel Efriom Fuksas. Other
research challenges include an uncertainty regarding dates due to
efforts to avoid brutal Russian Army conscription and several false
marriages to help family immigrate to Palestine.
