The Two Oldest Brothers Leave for Africa

Saul Fuchs

Saul Fuchs (?- 1955) Saul emigrated to South Africa in the 1890s.  He was smart, ambitious, tough, and soon became very prosperous.  His career began in a management capacity in the gold fields   Saul never married nor had children. He lived in a hotel in Pretoria RSA.  Professionally, he came to own a flourmill and was a successful trader in the RSA commodity market.  He was very charitable and supportive of his entire Fuchs family.  He was viewed as the family patriarch and his portrait hung in many RSA Fuchs homes. He regularly sent money back to Seduva and encouraged the remaining family to emigrate to the RSA. He saw no future for Jews in Lithuania.  Saul helped bring many family members from Lithuania to live in the RSA. He was a strong Zionist and supported a farming facility to train young pioneers for life in Palestine.  A significant number of family eventually immigrated to Israel.

David Fuchs.  (?-?)  David immigrated to South Africa with Saul. He became wealthy in a business involving animal hides in Windhoek, German Southwest Africa (Namibia). He and Saul did not get along, and there was some unknown issue which caused a major discord and relations were severed with the rest of the family.  David married at least twice, and had one son Fred who settled in the mining town of Welkom, Orange Free State Province, RSA. We believe that Fred had son Alan Fuchs and a daughter Debbie Wakefield.  Alan is believed to be still living in Welkom and active in local politics, Debbie and her family live in the Johannesburg region.
