Aerial Photographs of Rozhnyatov

This photograph was taken on July 4, 1944 by the German Air Force and was captured by the Allies. Briefly, this part of Galicia was occupied by German forces in July 1941; liberated by Russian forces in March 1944; recaptured in a counter attack by German forces about two months later; and finally liberated by Russian forces in July 1944. This photo is probably a reconnaissance photo taken in connection with the German counter attack. This photograph is availabe through the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) It is identified as RG 373~GX 663 SG~Exposure 42. A vendor suggested by NARA scanned the original photograph at a resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch). The original photograph was taken at 9am and the shadows of trees and houses suggest that north is up in the original photograph. In addition, mapping the cemetery validated this interpretation. This orientation differs from the sketch of Rozhnyatov shown in the Rozhnyatov Yizkor book. Based on the Yizkor book sketch, a number of landmarks have been identified tentatively.
