SIG member and Rokiskis
native Reuben Ruch remembered the following about some of these
Rokiskis businesses and their owners. (He is one of the survivors he
mentions below and after life in the Soviet Union, then Israel, now
lives in Australia)
- Meyer Ruch was one of the sons of Pesach
Ruch and was very highly educated . The iron trade store belonged
to two owners, Pesach Ruch and Chona
Arsh until 1935. They had a disagreement and each opened their own store.
The management of
Pesach's store switched to Meyer. In 1940 when the Soviet
authorities confiscated the store, Meyer and his wife and daughter
moved to Kovno. Two brothers: Issachar and David went
to study in the Kovno Yeshiva. All three brothers perished in Kovno
in the
first days of occupation. Meyer's wife Sara survived and she
emigrated to Israel (Reuben commented that he was not sure of this).
- Zelick Tzemachovitch was the manager
of the hotel, but the owner was his wife Luba. He was one
my father's best friends.
-
Six families were sent into exile
in Siberia: Etingoff, Klingman, Levin, Meller, Zalcman,
Ruch on 14 June 1941. And for them destiny took pity.
(According to Samuil Meller, Etingoff was a doctor, who was hired to
accompany the other deportees)
