Hanka ZYLBERBERG was the oldest of six brothers and sisters. She was in the Ghetto and escape from there, because her father and uncles planned for her escape. Hanka’s father Mendel met Sam SZWARCBARD in Auschwitz Camp, and he told him that if he survives, he should look for his daughter Hanka and marry her. Sam survived and found Hanka after the war. They was married.!!!! Hanka suffered terribly. She lived in fields; took refuge with strangers (never letting them know that she was jewish) walked in the streets hungry and cold. She joined the underground and used an assumed name. She went to church and prayed as a Catholic. A Polish peasant family took Hanka in and treated her like one of their own. They knew her identity and never gave her up. Hanka never forgot their kindness and the risk they took upon themselves. Hanka always saved and sent money to them. She sent packages of clothing and groceries that could be sold on the black market. She nominated them for their Heroic Stance. They are listed in Washinghton at the Holocaust Museum on the wall of the Righteous. Hanka remembered the address of her uncle Morris in US, and wrote to him. And Hanka and Sam lives near them Hanka’s uncle Morris, his wife Fannie and her cousin Anna came to Toronto to meet them. Morris and Fannie didn’t have children. The surname of Sara’s uncles who was Zylberberg, change to “Silverberg,” was just and americanized version from their real surname. Her mother Hanka , she change it to Anna because it was more “American.” Her father Samuel, then “Sam” Szwarcbard. They had two children: one daughter Sara who wrote Ana Nuta (She was named after her grandmother), and one son Martin Morris (Mendel Moshe, named for both grandfathers) Sara was born in Paris, France in 1949, and her brother in Brooklyn, New York, in 1954.
