Her grandfather Izack BERNSTEIN was born in Plonsk in October 1868. He subsequently changed his name to John BURNS, when he came to UK. His parents were Kiwa and Esther BERNTEIN. Izack left Plonsk in 1892 to settle in South Africa. He spent only six years there however, and then left for England in 1898, where he settled in Manchester. When he applied for naturalization in the U.K. he used the name John Isidor BURNS. This surnames was used for the registration on the birth certificate of his three children. Annabel's father, Harold BURNS was born in Manchester in 1901. Harold was 54 years old when Annabel was born. He never spoke about his life before the UK, and when he died she was 20 years old and didn't know anything about her past. Their Jewish descendants, she thought, have always been a little secretive about their roots, especially if they were involved in the horror of the Pogroms and the Shoáh.
