List of Immigrants to Ellis Island from Pereyaslav

Spelling of Pereyaslav
The protocol of this re-indexing project dictated searching the Ellis Island database by historical town name and alternate town names listed on JewishGen.org's Pereyaslav town page with a Soundex-like search. This technique identified immigrant manifests featuring exactly 100 different spellings of the word Pereyaslav, from "Beriaslaw" to "Tryaslawa." The most common spelling was "Perejaslaw." No doubt there were many more records that this wide search did not detect due to even more idiosyncratic spellings.
Occupation
The word "none" was entered in the database when the word was actually entered in the Occupation field by the immigration officer. The field was left blank in the database when the field was left blank on the manifest.
Origin
"Origin" refers to an immigrant's last permanent address, which, in almost all cases, was Pereyaslav.
Destination
New York City accounts for 67% of destinations provided by immigrants on this list. Many immigrants planned further destinations, no doubt, but gave the name of their first, immediate stopping point: New York.
