R' Issachar Ber ben Yitzhak Leifer of Nadworna
(1790 - 1848)

R' Issachar Ber Leifer was the son of R' Yitzhak Leifer of Kalusz and Feige bat R' Itamar haKohen. He was the father of R' Aron Aryeh Leib Leifer and R' Mordechai Leifer, both listed on this page.

R' Mordechai Leifer of Nadworna
(18 May 1835 - 15 October 1894)

Mordekhai ben Issachar Ber Leifer, mi-Nadvorna-Boshtina

R' Mordechai Leifer was the son of R' Issachar Dov Bertzi Leifer of Nadworna and Rachel Bloch, the daughter of R' Avraham Leib Bloch of Nadworna. The Bloch's were a family of scholars and rabbis from Nadworna and neighboring Delatyn, including R' Chayim Bloch of Delatyn.

When R' Mordechai's father died in 1848, R' Mordechai was brought up by his great-uncle R' Meir of Przemyshlany. R' Mordechai lived an ascetic life. Known for his extreme piety, for his humility, and for his insight into human nature, and as a miracle worker, his presence in Nadworna attracted thousands of Jews wishing to receive his advice and his blessing. After leaving Nadworna, he lived in Huszt, and finally in Bustino. During this period he travelled through the Hasidic shtetls of Transcarpathia. The author of several prayers, his minhagim survive through the efforts of his decendents.

Manfred J. Sakel
(6 June 1900 - 2 December 1957)

Born in Nadworna, Dr. Sakel earned his degree in Vienna. Living in Berlin and Vienna, he fled the Nazis, arriving in New York in 1936. A neurophysiologist and psychiatrist, he was most noted for introducing insulin-shock therapy, which for many years was the standard therapy for schizophrenia.

R' Avraham David Wahrman Buczacz
(b. 1770, Nadworna - d. 1840, Buczacz)

Tsevi Hirsh Avraham David ben Asher Anshel mi-Butshat

Born in Nadworna, R' Avraham David was a child prodigy known for his Talmudic knowledge. As a result R' Zevi Hirsch chose R' Avraham David as his son-in-law when he was 10 years old.  When R' Avraham David was 20, he became the rabbi of Goslowitz. Later, under the influence of R' Levi Yitzhak of Berditchev, he became a Hasid. In 1813 he became the Rosh Bet Din of Buczacz where he remained the rest of his life.

Tsevi Hirsh mi-Nadverna

R' Zevi Hirsch of Nadworna was Av Bet Din (Head of the Rabbinical Court) of Nadworna. He was a disciple of Dov Ber of Mezeritch and Yechiel Michel, the Maggid of Zlotchov. R' Zevi Hirsch was known for his ethical writings.
