A JEWISH STUDENT
at the Catholic Gymnasium (1943)
János Kovács (1943) in the uniform
he wore to the Catholic gymnasium in Miskolc.
In the photograph above, János Kovács was ten years old and in his first year of attendance at the Fráter Gyögy Katolikus Gimnázium [Frater Gyorgy Catholic Gymnasium] in Miskolc. There was no Jewish gymnasium or upper school in Miskolc. Each year, only six boys from the Erzsébet Izraelita Elemi Iskola [Elisabeth Jewish Elementary School] were accepted at the Catholic gymnasium. In 1943, Janos was one of them.
