In the photograph above, János Kovács was ten years old and in his first year of attendance at the Fráter Gyögy Katolikus Gimnázium [Frater Gyorgy Catholic Gymnasium] in Miskolc. There was no Jewish gymnasium or upper school in Miskolc. Each year, only six boys from the Erzsébet Izraelita Elemi Iskola [Elisabeth Jewish Elementary School] were accepted at the Catholic gymnasium. In 1943, Janos was one of them.
The Fráter Gyögy Katolikus Gimnázium [Frater Gyorgy Catholic
Gymnasium]. The building now houses a public school in Miskolc.
