It was not uncommon, especially when Miskolc was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, for Jewish students who wished to continue their education to attend the University of Vienna. Josef Weisz (born Miskolc 1862) was the son of Elias Weisz and Eszti Groszman. After finishing his primary and secondary education in Miskolc, he matriculated at the University of Vienna, where he studied medicine. Josef abandoned his effort to become a doctor after two years as a medical student, after which he returned to Miskolc to work as a businessman. The photo above shows him in uniform during his service in the Austro-Hungarian army.
