Lomza Genealogical News
Subject: Announcing the 1897 Census of Lomza and area
From: "Jose Gutstein" <Gutstein@bellsouth.net>
Date: Thu, 9 Nov 2006

At the conference in New York, Jewish Records Indexing - Poland announced exciting news about the indexing of the 1897 Census for the Lomza district (including Lomza, Zambrow, Nowogrod, Wizna, and Sniadowo and smaller villages in the area.)

Sources such as Censuses and Books of Residents often provide information about previously unknown children or entire family branches.

In all, there'll be entries for more than 25,000 individuals. Since there were fewer than 10,000 Jews in the town of Lomza in 1897, we expect there
will be many discoveries relating to nearby towns and villages where the vital records are either missing or incomplete.

In some cases, records include entries for people born in other parts of  the then Russian Empire.

The census contains:

Surname, first name and father's first name.
Position within family (Head, wife, son, daughter)
   Age
   Marital state.
   Social position, title.
   Where born.
Place where registered in the Permanent Books of Residents.
   Place currently living.
   Remarks concerning absence.
   Religion denomination.
   Mother tongue (language).
   Literacy
Place of studies (and place from which graduated.
Occupation, side occupation and army service.

According to current estimates, there will be more than 20,000 entries for Jews in the census plus another 4000 temporary residents from outside the Lomza district, such as yeshiva students, soldiers and prisoners (!) as well as regular residents. Data entry has progressed well and approximately 8000 entries are currently available.

There are more than 2200 different surnames in the 8000 entries. Surnames appearing 20 or more times in this preliminary file are listed below.

You can see all surnames from the records indexed so far by going to
http://www.jri-poland.org/psa/status.htm#Lomza and clicking on the link under Lomza 1897 Census.

There are 64 towns mentioned in the entries to date, and those appearing 8 or more times are also listed below.

The fundraising target for this project is approximately $8000. When these funds have been raised, the data will be searchable online in the JRI-Poland database.

While contributions of any size will be appreciated, a donation of no less than $100 will make you eligible to obtain the Lomza area 1897 Census Excel file of names indexed up to now, as well as all future updates.

Having the Excel file will enable you to sort the data by various fields as well as to browse the names and possibly find family members for which you had not thought to search.
