Pre-War Directories
Many old international telephone
directories are available at the New
York Public Library. Pre-war telephone directories for Poland are among
those available. Information included are name, occupation, name of business,
business address and business telephone number, if one existed. Also included
is a section similar to modern-day "yellow pages."
The New York Public Library has copies
of:
- Polish telephone directories
for 1936/37, Spis abonenow sieci telefoniczynch panstwowych i koncesjonowanych
w Polsce, under call number: *ZAN-9541.
- The 1930 telephone directory
of Poland, Urzedowy spis abonenetow,
under call no.: Slav. Reserve-96-7788.
The Family History Library (the Mormons)
has a copy of 1936/37 Polish telephone directories under film #1,344,446.
There is project
underway to index the 1929 Polish business directories of all cities and
towns in
Poland. This is a project of Jewish Records
Indexing - Poland, in cooperation with JewishGen. For more
information, see the 1929
Business Directory Project. Click "Table of Contents" to
reach the specific pages for scanned pages of the city of Lodz business
directory, in PDF format.
If you are interested in a pre-WWII
business, you should also consider the many business directories for Poland.
I suggest that you read my article, "Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century
Polish Directories as Resources for Genealogical Information," in the
Spring 1997 edition of Avotaynu.
