August 2013
Dear Kremenets District Friends,
On 4 August, we held the Kremenets District Research Group
Annual Meeting at the IAJGS Conference in Boston.
More than twenty-two of us attended the meeting. (Some attendees didn't fill
out the sign-in sheet.)
I am attaching to this message the presentation I gave at
our Annual Meeting. It consists of a Word 2010 document and a PowerPoint slide
presentation. The presentation identifies our accomplishments in the past year
and gives you a preview of what is coming in 2013-2014. I will follow this up
with a series of messages in the next couple of weeks to give you more detail
about the new records we have and the records that we expect to obtain in the
next year.
We have a very large backlog of translated records that need
to be proofread. These are revision lists (in Russian) and vital records (in
both Russian and Hebrew/Yiddish). Ellen Garshick and Richard Spector have
agreed to help me do this proofreading so that we can get those records out to
you and get them included in our Concordance of Personal Names and Town Names. If
any of you can help by comparing the handwritten Russian and/or Hebrew with our
translations, please contact me.
We also have a large backlog of records awaiting
translation. These are vital records, family lists, Tarbut
school lists, etc. We have purchased these records from the Central Archives
for the History of the Jewish People. Some of these records are in Russian,
some in Hebrew, some in Polish, and some in combinations of these languages. We
need help translating these records.
In the past year our expenditures for
document acquisition and translation far exceeded our revenue from donations.
Now, our available funds are at a critically low point ... so low that we may
have to halt professional translations temporarily until we receive additional
donations. You can help your fellow Kremenets District researchers continue by
donating to our account at JRI-Poland.
Here is how you can make a donation.
Contributions to "Jewish
Records Indexing - Poland" may be by check, bank draft, money order, or
credit card. Be sure to specify that your
contribution is for the Kremenets Shtetl CO-OP.

As many of you know, at the IAJGS
Conference, I stepped down as Coordinator of Ukraine SIG and turned the
Coordinator position over to Janette Silverman. Now, I am looking forward to
returning to my Kremenets District tasks. In this next year, you will see a
record number of documents translated and posted. However, our progress depends
on you. To all of you who have helped us get this far, I offer a huge
Thank You. You have been wonderful. If you have not yet contributed to our
work, please do so today. We are totally dependent on your donations.
Best wishes,
Ron
