The following explanation submitted by Richard Spector accompanied the photos:
Jacob Berenstein was born in Shumsk about 1861 and died there in 1922. He married Yehudis (Edes) Susak who was born about 1861, probably in Vishnevets, and died in 1929 in Shumsk. They had eight children. Jacob, although born poor, became a very wealthy grain merchant and a leading citizen of Shumsk. Many of the unidentified people in the photographs are certainly children and grandchildren of Jacob and Edes.

Their first child was Srul born was born in 1877 in Shumsk and died 1/19/1925 in Lanovits. He married Golda Rabinowicz. Among their children were Azriel who was born in 1910 in Lanovitz and died 6/23/2009 in Had Hasharon, Israel; Avraham, b. 1911 Lanovitz, d. about 1943, his wife’s name was Hadessah and she was born in Pshemiehel; and Rachel, b. 1905 in Lanovitz and died there in 1942. Their second child was Josef, b. March 1, 1881 in Obych Village. Their third child was Dina, b. 1884 in Shumsk and died 1942 in Lanovitz. She married Uziel Rabin (a cousin of Golda Rabinowicz) who was born about 1907 in Lanovitz and died July 1999 in Tel Aviv. They had children born in Lanovitz:Manya b. 1907 d. July 1999 in Tel Aviv; Chaim b. 1910 d. 1990 in Israel; Yeshayahu b. 1910-1911 d. 1992 in Rozisht, Ukraine; and Azriel, b. 1919 d. 1945. Their nineth child was Sarah who was born in Shumsk in 1900 and died 3/17/1951 in Israel. She married YehoshuaFiks, b. 1895 and died 1/1/1981 in Israel. They had a daughter Ida born in 1929 and probably a son Oren.

Jacob and Edes’ other children, all but two born in Shumsk, were: Feivel, b. November 27, 1892 d. 1940 in Katyn, Poland; David, b. 4/27/1895 d. 8/30/1951 in St. Louis, Missouri; Ethel, b. 1895-1900 d. 1943; Monik, b. 1903-1904 d. 1914-1915; and Breindel, b. 1907 d. 1943. Yehoshue, b. March 24, 1885, d. October 25, 1885, and Gitel, b. September 16, 1886, were born in Rakhmanov.

Jacob and Edes had at least 22 grandchildren; only Monik did not marry. It is not known if Yosef and Gitel married.
