Grębów Town Plans

Grębów Town Plans: Urban and Rural map of Grębów as it was before the war  (1930's)

Susana Leistner Bloch’s notes:

This map represents Joshua Garfinkel's recall of what the town was like in the 1930's, before the war, before the Germans overran Galicia, before Joshua escaped to Russia and spent the war period there. It shows the town center and the rural districts near the town and the roads leading to nearby shtetlach.

Below are the shtetl names as used in Poland today and approved by the US Board on Geographic Names. Also names of some residents, Jewish names in caps. Some names could not be identified as shtetlach or surnames.

Although one cannot be sure, it appears that the map shows not only nearby shtetlach but also people who lived in the outskirts of Grębów.

Grębów Town Plans: Map of Grębów Urban District

April 2002

Sarah Fortgang’s writes:

Map of the urban district of Grębów.

This map represents Joshua Garfinkel's recall of what the town was like in 1945 after the war,  when he came back from Russia, went to his family's home told the residents there that it was his, and they tried to kill him. His compatriot was killed in a similar case. Joshua ran away to a displaced persons' camp and then went to Palestine as an illegal immigrant before the founding of the state of Israel. He lived in Holon, near us. The maps were drawn for us when Joshua was helping us with details, names, dates, locations, etc - data for our joint family tree. We're kin. They were drawn by his hand on our dining room table, he left them with us, =  the originals are with us. Except for the copies donated to KRRG for the Grębów webpage , there are no other copies. Joshua's wife also died,  just recently. They had no children.
