The Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre (JHGC), in partnership with the City of Johannesburg, seeks to raise awareness of the evils of genocide with a particular focus on the Holocaust in Europe and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. It serves as a memorial to the six million Jews who were killed in the Holocaust, all victims of Nazi Germany and the estimated 800,000 Tutsi victims of the Genocide in Rwanda. This is the first museum of its kind that brings together the stories of genocide across two continents.

The Centre also serves as a hub for educational programmes addressing issues of prejudice, racism, and xenophobia in all their manifestations, and their consequential dangers to freedom and democracy. The Centre hosts numerous temporary exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, commemorations and other special events. It is through these activities that we hope to contribute to a more caring and just society in which human rights and diversity are respected.

The building, replete with architectural symbolism, was designed by renowned architect Lewis Levin, “The passage from racial oppression to recovery and restoration was incorporated into the layout of the building. Our journey will take you into the darkest recesses of humanity but will end in a memorial courtyard that promises hope and revival” says Levin.
