My father was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, and raised in Hukliva, Czechoslovakia on July 15, 1919, and was the youngest of about seven children. He survived the Holocaust. In 1953, in Canada, his name changed to Sam NEWMAN.

My father's father, descendant of Chatam Sofer, a very religious man, born c. 1880. He was a sofer stam (a scribe) who wrote torah scrolls and mezuzahs. Married Esther NEUMANN d. 1923 from illness, my father was only 4. Because my grandparents were married by a rabbi and had no civil marriage or marriage documents, all children received the name NEUMANN and not Sofer. My grandfather had the same name as the great Jewish scholar, the Hatam Sofer, who was called Moshe Sofer.

Left: My Uncle, Jindrich NEUMANN, born in 1909, lived in Prague following WWII with his wife Suri. Known as Chaim NEUMANN, he was the Shammes of the Altneu synagogue in Prague from WWII until his passing.
Center: My Uncle, Hersch NEUMANN, born in 1909, lived in Bnei Brak, and was known as Zvi NEUMANN in Israel following WWII.
