EIDLIN FAMILY
Mordukh Meerovich
EIDLIN was born in Dubrowna. He was an itinerant teacher until he married Deborah
Berkovna LURIA, born in Bolshoi Tockmak,
UKR, the daughter of a wealthy tradesman in the Crimea, who had been his
pupil. They settled in Simferopol where
he became a newspaper publisher, owning five newspapers. One time, an article he published in the Krim newspaper led to the suspension of the newspaper and a
9 month stint in jail. He knew the
article would probably get him in trouble, but as he remarked to a cousin,
“yes, but how can I lived with my conscience if I don’t publish it?” A Zionist,
he sent his three sons to Mandate Palestine when the Russian revolution
came. All the sons eventually relocated
to the United States.
Mordukh was a
member of the Simferopol City Duma in 1918 and 1919, once running on the
Zionist ticket and once on the Constitutional Democratic (Kadet)
ticket. The location of the print shop
was Pushkinska #1, and the family was registered at Pushkinska #20. In
addition to the newspapers, he printed such things as visiting cards and
invitations.
According to a family rumor, Deborah’s
father left his entire fortune to three EIDLIN brothers living in Newcastle,
though it is unclear in which country Newcastle is located. Research in the Newcastle, England archives
was unsuccessful.
