My great grandfather, Jozsef Ungar (Chaim ben Chaim Hakohen), was born around 1852 in Tisza-Lok. It is assumed that Jozsef’s father died before he was born, hence him being named after his father. Jozsef was married three times. Through his life, Jozsef was a woman’s tailor, caretaker in a stone mine (in BK), and daily agricultural worker. He was known as a very religious man and a hard worker (someone who liked to be busy). He married his second wife, Eszter (maiden name Stern,) in Bodrogkeresztúr on March 13, 1884. Jozsef and Eszter had seven children (two of whom survived). Their oldest, Jutta (Julia) Ungar, was adopted by the famed Reb Shayele when she was 9 years old (after the death of her mother). She stayed with the Rebbe in his house until she was wed. Bela Ungar was the other child who survived, and he was my grandfather. Bela came to America in 1907. Much more information is available by clicking on my family tree below. I have traced back to 1800.
