According
to the records of April 13, 1888, read by our Recording Secretary
in protocol No. 1, we find that at the meeting our society was
organized in the residence of brother Mike Rubin at No. 8 Chrystie
St., New York, with a membership of 18, of which brothers Mike
Rubin, Morris Watzky, Max Kass, Max Blumberg, Chas. Eigman and
Bernard Rubin were the organizers and charter members, brother
Mike Rubin as the 1st President.
The object of this organization was declared to be,
benevolence, mutual aid to members, and general outside welfare
work, which is being successfully carried out to this day. Two
years later at a meeting held on February 12, 1890, at 412 Grand
Street, brother Mike Rubin presiding, the report of a committee to
buy cemetery was adopted. The report says in part that the
committee bought 7 ½ lots on Washington Cemetery for the sum of
$375.00 to be paid out within 4 years. The first payment was
$87.50 and July 13, 1890, the completion of the first temporary
gate to the cemetery, which cost the sum of $30.86, was
celebrated.
In the year 1890, when the Verein’s capital amounted to
$300, it was decided to open a Sick Benefit Fund which paid 3
dollars per week sick benefit.
The above
sum was raided to $5.00 in 1892, when the Verein’s capital was
aggregated to $1000.
At a meeting held July 3, 1894, at 257 East Houston St.,
brother Mike Rubin presiding, it was decided to make a regular
gate to the cemetery in partnership with the Pruziner Verein whose
cemetery lots are next to our. The costs on our share amounted to
$112.50. The completion of this gate was celebrated August 26,
1894.
At a meeting held on May 4, 1904, brother Sam Plumer
presiding, a report of the 2nd Cemetery Committee was
delivered, that they bought 12 lots on Washington Cemetery for the
sum of $1800, of which the first payment amounted to $300 and the
balance to be paid within 5 years.
The erection of the gate on the second cemetery was
celebrated July 23, 1912. The disbursements amounted to $700.
