The Hofschowitz family had roots in Bauska, Latvia going back to the 18th century. David Hofschowitz (1878-1936) was a son of Elias Hofschowitz (1834-1893), a grandson of Levin Hofschowitz (1797-1875), and great grandson of Lipman Hofschowitz (1778-1863). In the early part of the twentieth century, David was an outstanding businessman in Bauska. He ran a watermill on the Memele River that was essential to a wide range of activities in Bauska. He also operated woolcombing and knittery shops. Brother Marcus (Max) was an administrator of the synagogue and served on Bauska's City Council.
