Tiszafüred Religious

~ Religious Life ~

The First Hundred Years

In 1803, the Chevra Kadisha (burial society) was established in Tiszafüred. The first synagogue, constructed in the first half of the 19th century, was classic in style and located the main street, near the Roman Catholic church. The first rabbi, Mozes SCHÖNFELD (b. 1791, in Szikszo), was the son of Jakab SCHÖNFELD, the rabbi of Szikszo. Rabbi Mozes SCHÖNFELD was the rabbi of Tiszafüred for 30 years. In 1848, he moved to Sarkad and later, to Simand, where he died in 1867.

The next rabbi of Tiszafüred was Rabbi Yisroel Yona Tzvi (Herman) ROSENBERG (b. 1790, in Obuda/Altofen). He moved from Verpelet to Tiszafüred and, in 1865, established a yeshiva which functioned until 1944. In 1876, he established a Jewish school. The yeshiva attracted students from far and wide. His son, Rabbi Sámuel ROSENBERG, was also a well-known rabbi who practiced in Hunfalva and established a yeshiva there. His son, Moshe (Moritz) ROSENBERG, was born in Verpelet and his marriage occurred on 24 April 1854. Sadly, on 4 July 1855, he died the age of 29.

Rabbi Nathan JUNGREISZ (b. 1833, in Nagymárton) was Rabbi Herman ROSENBERG's successor. His father, Rabbi Antal JUNGREISZ, was the rabbi in Csenger. Rabbi JUNGREISZ was brought up in Csenger, where he studied under his father, who was well-known throughout the country as an outstanding scholar. His unrivalled knowledge made him famous, not only within the country, but abroad as well. He was the chief rabbi of Nagy-Szölös and of Fehér-Gyarmat. Twenty-one years earlier, the congregation had invited him to fill the empty rabbinical chair, which he did until his death. He held that post conscientiously, with the greatest devotion and tact. He also wrote two Hebrew books, Torász Mose Noszon and Menuchász Mose, which were published in Munkács.

He passed away on 23 September 1889 and his funeral was attended by 600-700 mourners. Among them were several chief rabbis from the towns of Csenger, Biharnagybajom, Mezöcsát and Marosvásárhely. He had two sons: one was a rabbi in Eger, the other in Nádudvar.

The nationwide rabbinical congress, held in Budapest, in 1868-69, was where Jewish community representatives were to talk about national representation and modernization, but it caused the division of Hungarian Jewry into the three movements of Status Quo Ante, Neolog (reform) and Orthodox (traditional). The so-called Status Quo Antes, especially incorporating those living in the cities, wanted to keep the existing situation. The so-called Neologs wanted modernization. The Orthodox Jews, mainly those living in small villages and towns, wanted no change. Moreover, they wanted any changes that had been effected until then to undone. Tiszafüred, being a smaller settlement, followed the Orthodox traditions and always emphasized its independent status.

By 1910, Tiszafüred had three synagogues.

The 19th and 20th Century

The presidents of the religious institutions and the people in the highest ranks of authority, always came from the richest or most influential circles of society. The honorary Chevra Kadisha president was always the rabbi. However, the head administrator was chosen each year from the highly respected members of the community. In 1894, the congregation's estimated income was 9,224 Hungarian forint, of which 1,774 Hungarian forint was spent on the school. The rabbi, cantor and the shochet (religious slaughterer) all lived in official quarters.

The congregation maintained a school, a synagogue, a prayer house, a religious school and a mikvah (ritual bathhouse), all of which which were of great importance in Tiszafüred's religious life.

The daughter of Rabbi Mór SZÓFER, Jolan, married Rabbi Samuel STRASSZER. He worked as the vice-rabbi beside his father-in-law and, upon his father-in-law's death, he took over the full responsibilities. He was very knowledgeable and an important respected leader. He was deported in 1944.

The first synagogue was constructed circa 1900, but it was auctioned in 1911. Immediately afterward, the Jewish community began to build a new synagogue, by obtaining a loan of 40,000 koronato secured by the town. The blue-print was drawn by István IGÁRI and the contractor was Márton VÁGNER. The synagogue, built in the Secessionist style, was without a doubt the most impressive building in Tiszafüred. For the large surfaces, ornamental bricks were used. The entry door on the main street had a protruding Secessionist façade and the two sides had protruding ornamental brick stripes. The building was finished on time and there was a festive dedication ceremony on 16 May 1916.

Today, of the brick ornamentation, little remains except some on the side of the former synagogue building.

József KUTI, the retired school principal, remembers the religious life between the two world wars: "We had a lovely synagogue. The late Rabbi Sámuel STRASSZER, lived in the courtyard flat. There was even a small prayer house, used as a Bét Hámidrásh (house of learning), where he conducted religious services. Yeshiva students, who came from all over the country, thought he was a remarkable man, a great scholar and very generous. He donated a large part of his income to the poor. He had a wonderful standing in the community-at-large and he supervised the religious life of other nearby communities, such as Tiszaigar, Tiszaszöllös, Tiszaszentimre, Egyek, Tiszacsege, Tiszaderzs and Poroszló.

Endre VÁRKONYI remembers: "There were always ultra-religious people who could be seen all the time coming from and going to the synagogue. However, the majority of the population only went on Friday evening or Saturday morning. My own grandfather, who was fairly religious, preferred to pray at home. I have the feeling that some of them went to synagogue only because at that time it was the right thing to do. It was society's morals."

~ Tiszafüred Cemetery ~

Jewish families who lived in Tiszafüred and probably the surrounding communities used the Tiszafüred Cemetery as the final resting place for their loved ones. The cemetery is located at the intersection of Nyúl utca and Kertész utca with the entrance gate located on Nyúl utca. Translations of the tombstones are provided for the images below.
