Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir

at Central Synagogue in 1999

Above: Advertisements sent to congregants of the Central Synagogue, Sydney, Australia, by the synagogue’s Rabbi Levi Wolf, via WhatsApp. The messaging platform was also used to deliver pre-Yontif recordings of sermons as well as cantorial and choral renditions of inter alia “Avinu Malkeinu” (the day before Erev Rosh Hashonah) and “Kol Nidrei” (on Erev Yom Kippur). Sung by Senior Cantor Shimon Farkas, with live superimposition of Jerusalem’s Kolot Min Hashamayim Choir (its "presence" being virtual, rather than real), these special recordings were made in lieu of the fact that about three months prior to the 2021 (5781–2) High Holidays, Sydney (followed soon by Melbourne) were under a strict lockdown due to a third global wave of the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). That situation unfortunately persists as of the time of this writing. However, these unique recordings were made only because of the COVID-19 situation.
