HOLY TRANSFIGURATION ORTHODOX CHURCH

The blue-domed Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church stands in a central part of town.   It is also known as the "Pre-Obrazhensky" Church.   Construction of this Church began in the late 18th century, by Semyon Zorich, who managed to lay the foundation, but the church was not completed until much later, in 1905.   It is built in an eclectic style of neo-Russian Church architecture.  This church building survived the years of Soviet atheism and the ravages of WWII.    In 1993 the church was repainted, the main dome was restored, and a new roof cross added.
