Sidney (Selig) Kalmanowitz fought against Germany in World War
II.
The picture was taken by Zamszteigman, Lida & therefore presumeably
dates from before the German occupation in 1941. There's evidence
he served in the Tracker's Battalion of the 249th Lithuanian Regiment
of
the Soviet (Red) Army. He's presumed to have been wounded March 9,
1943.
His first wife, possibly named Leah Larinski, was murdered. His
uniform
has been identified as a pre-World War II Polish Army uniform by a host
of knowledgable Jewishgenners. This suggests the photograph also
predates the Hitler-Stalin Pact, shortly after which Russia occupied
the
Lida area.
