Sokołów Małopołski and Leżajsk Landsmanshaftn and Congregations 


Sokołów Małopołski “shared” a Landsmanshaft with Leżajsk.  Please be aware when visiting the online databases of  the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), New York Metropolitan Area Burial Society Plots and Cemeteries listed in Federal Writers' Project of the Works Progress that the town entry : Sokolow Podlaski was listed in error and the correct listing is: Sokolów Małopołski. 

Landsmanshaftn:

In the 1960s, the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS) microfilmed the Jewish incorporation records for Landsmanshaftn and other town and country-related organizations incorporated in New York County the period from 1848-1920. These Landsmanshaftn provided social and economic services and support for their members. The following Leżajsk Landsmanshaftn [home town associations] are recorded in the microfilms: In the 1960s, the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS) microfilmed the Jewish incorporation records for Landsmanshaftn and other town and country-related organizations incorporated in New York County the period from 1848-1920. These Landsmanshaftn provided social and economic services and support for their members. 

Di yidishe landsmanshaftn fun nyu york (The Jewish Landsmanshaftn of New York) (pages 274-372) prepared by the Yiddish Writers' Guild of the Federal Writers' Project, Works Projects Administration, published by the I.L. Peretz Yiddish Writers' Group in 1938 lists the following Landsmanshaftn / Organizations that possibly included Sokołów Małopołski. We could not establish if the listing for the Lezansker Young Men's Benevolent Association included Sokolów but list it here in case someone recognizes a surname from Sokolów when visiting the cemetery plots.  If you have information that would confirm that Sokołów was included in the Lezansker YMBA and the Lezansker YLA please let us know.   

Synagogues In 1939 the Federal Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration conducted a survey of all known houses of worship in the United States, both Jewish and non-Jewish. The synagogue listings for New York City are on five rolls of microfilm at the New York City Municipal Archives. They are Microfilm #'s (M.N.) 21318-21322, Roll #'s 319-323.  The synagogues, divided separately by borough, are listed in the accompanying Each entry contains both a Form # beginning with the letter "W" (in the upper left-hand corner of the form) and a Card #

(in the upper right-hand corner of the form). The year of organization is also given.  The following Sokolów / Leżajsk Synagogue are listed:

The following synagogue is not listed but since it owned a plot in New Mt. Carmel Cemetery we know it was active at some time: 

New York Metropolitan Area Burial Society Plots: In 1989, the Jewish Genealogical Society, Inc. (New York) began an effort to identify the names and cemetery locations of all Jewish burial society plots in the New York metropolitan area. These include plots of landsmanshaftn, synagogues, family circles, fraternal organizations and labor unions. We could not establish if the listing for the Lezansker Young Men's Benevolent Association included Sokolów but list it here in case someone recognizes a surname from Sokolów when visiting the cemetery plots.  If you have information that would confirm that Sokołów was included in the Lezansker YMBA please let us know.   The following cemetery plots are listed:

YIVO Landsmanshaftn Collection: The following Leżajsk Landsmanshaft file is included in the YIVO Landsmanshaft collection:

The group was originally involved with the medical needs of its members but in later years was limited to functions of a burial society. . The society disbanded in 1991 and its records became the possession of New York State. Around 1993, the State turned over the society's records to YIVO. The records YIVO has include; incorporation document, financial and dues ledgers; assorted The records YIVO has include; incorporation document, financial and dues ledgers; assorted minutes; name and address books; name cards and addresses; stamps and keys. Also in YIVO's possession are meeting notices; grave reservations; burials; name lists; minutes, dissolution; cemetery maps; by-laws; correspondence; compensation payments; financial reports; deeds and indentures.
