Alexei Zonoff, his wife Alexandra and their daughter Shura pose in front of the family’s grocery and dairy products shop in Harbin in 1929, shortly before emigrating to the United States. Next door is the butcher shop of  F.A. Tsatskin.

Alexei arrived in Harbin with his family circa 1920 from Sharkan village in Vyatka (now Kirov) Province in Russia, where he had been a prosperous grain merchant. He fled to Harbin to escape the advancing Red Army, whose cadres were persecuting the Russian bourgeoisie.

Photo was made by Alexei’s son Peter Zonoff and was submitted by Alexei’s grandson George Zonoff.
