~ Religious Life ~

Religion played an important part in the day-to-day lives of Chop's Jews and all were Orthodox Jews. Most spoke Hungarian, Czech, Ukrainian, Russian and Yiddish, the language of the home and commerce.

This was a vibrant village with farmers, craftsmen, salesmen, traders, etc. and the children of each family had their work, too, such as getting up early to hitch the horses to the wagons, feed the horses, make deliveries of milk and then be back in time to go to school.

Chop was under the jurisdiction of the Ungvár Rabbinate and by 1944, had a synagogue, mikvah, kosher butcher, and cheder (a religious school). The synagogue was very modern, for its time. It had an upper balcony for the women, in keeping with Orthodox prayer customs, and it accommodated about 300 congregants with a room for study, meetings and celebrations.

Rabbi Hermann (Yitzchok Tzvi) LEBOVICS (1865-1944), a student of Rabbi Moshe GRUNWALD from Huszt (Chust), was appointed rabbi of Csap (Chop) in 1912—officiating for 31 years. He wrote Shulchan Ha'Ezer - Chelek Aleph (part I) that was printed in Dés, in 1929. (Today, Dés is Dej, Romania.) Chelek Bet (part II) was printed in Beregszász (Berehove) in 1932. His works are still used as an anthology on marriage related questions. He perished in the Holocaust.

Jewish families that lived in Chop, and possibly other nearby villages, used the Chop Cemetery—located outside of town— as the final resting place for their loved ones. Sadly, the Chop cemetery no longer exists and no tombstones remain. In the following images, you can see that storage sheds have been built on the property that was once the Jewish cemetery of Chop.

In the documents section of the "Other" tab, you will find a link to a U.S. Commission Report completed in 2005 that attempted to document Jewish Cemeteries (and Synagogues and Mass Grave Sites) in Ukraine. This cemetery, as well as many other village cemeteries, are not documented in that report.

Announcement: As you can see below, the Chop cemetery no longer exists.

The Lo Tishkach Foundation, European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, is seeking individuals with a connection to this cemetery, or anyone else interested in helping to fulfill the mitzva of placing a memorial marker for the former cemetery. If you are inspired to help financially , click HERE to make a tax-deductible donation to install a memorial marker.
