[1] Sometimes a page number continued for several pages until the number was changed to the next higher number.  Ed.
[2] Social standing in this group of residents: e.g., citizen or immigrant from another town or shtetl.  Ed.
[3]  Often there were no street names and only the house numbers were available.  Ed.
[4]  Examples: Wohn Gebäude or private residence; Wohn u [und] Wirtschafts Gebäude or residence and house for economic use for agriculture or shops; Baustelle or property where one could build a house; and Hofraum or place in the yard behind the house or without a house, for the animals or for storing wood.  Ed.
[5] Joche was the plural word for Joch.  However, the numbering system in Austria was different from English or American usage.  As an English example, one would count one square meter, then two square meters using the plural word.  In Austria, it was written, one Joch, two Joch, three Joch, but not three Joche.  The plural word Joche meant that there were several different numbered measurements listed in the column.  Ed.
[6]  One Quadratklafter equaled 3.5967 Quadratmeter.  The linear measurement of 1 Klafter equaled 6 Fuß (Feet) or 1.896484 meters.  One thousand Quadratklafter was called a Jauch, which was not the same as a Joch.  One Jauch was also equal to a Morgen.  One Joch was 40 x 40 Klafter, or 1600 square-klafter, and equaled 5,754 square meters.   In Russia, 1 Sazhen equaled 3.5 square meters.  One Morgen was a square measurement.  The original meaning was "so much ground as a man can plough in one morning."  The exact size of a Morgen varied in different regions, but came to be 1000 Quadratklafter.  Ed.
[7]  Abbreviation for Gulden.  One fl. (Gulden) equaled 100 kr. (Kreuzer).  Ed.
[8]  Abbreviation for Kreuzer.  Ed.
[9]  Before 1907, only  #1 class individuals could vote, such as the wealthy farmers, merchants, craftsmen, and professionals.  Ed.
[10]At that time, the interest charged was usually about 4%.  Therefore, the total tax would have been paid in 25 years.  Ed.
