The Brody Rabbinical Families  Civil Records Project

This project was started in 1999 by Dr. Neil Rosenstein and R. Dov Weber, who commissioned a L'viv researcher to review all birth, marriage, and death records in the archives there for Brody's Jewish community.  The project was a natural outgrowth of the information being revealed by epitaphs examined in connection with the Brody Cemetery Project.  The aim of the Brody Rabbinical Families Civil Records Project is the identification of, and collection of information on, 19th-century members of Brody's rabbinical families, including descendants of famous rabbis.   The Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine, City of L'viv, appear to contain Brody Jewish birth, marriage and death records only for 1815-1871; so this project has been thus far limited to that time period.  Records are presently being searched for the following surnames:

        ASHKENAZI, ASHKENASI
        BABAD
        BYK/BIK
        CHARAL, CHARASH
        FRANKEL
        HALBERSTAM, HALBERTHAL
        HOROWITZ, HURWITZ, GURWITZ, GUEWITZ

        LEWINSHOR, LEWINSHUR
        MARGOLIS, MARGOLIES, MARGOLIOTH
        NATHANSON, NATANSOHN
        NIRENSTEIN
        POPERS, POPPERS
        POSNER
        RAPPAPORT
        ROKEAH, ROKEACH
