Zapson' Religious

~ Religious Life ~

Zapson' had a synagogue and a mikvah (ritual bath house). The Rabbi of Kaszony, Zvi RUTENBERG (1890-1944), visited the small community
of Zapson' when the mikvah was made kosher or baking of matzah (unleavened bread) for the Jewish holiday of Pesach (Passover).

The Kosher butcher came to Zapson' only once a week and funerals were held without a rabbi. The community hired Cantors only for the
high holidays.

~ Zapson' Cemetery ~

Jewish families that lived in Zapson', and possibly other nearby villages, used the Zapson' cemetery as the final resting place for their loved ones.

The Jewish cemetery is located outside of town, on the mountainside, behind a house along the road. It has a wall around it and seems
well-maintained by goats.

In the documents section of the "Other" tab, you will find a link to a U.S. Commission Report completed in 2005 that attempted to document
Jewish Cemeteries (and Synagogues and Mass Grave Sites) in Ukraine. This cemetery is not listed as well as many other village cemeteries
of the Zakarpats'ka oblast.
