~ Religious Life ~

Religion played an important part in the day-to-day lives of Vylok's Jews and all were Orthodox Jews. Most spoke Hungarian, Czech, Ukrainian, Russian and Yiddish, the language of the home and commerce. In 1941, the Orthodox congregation had 951 members with 91 paying a tax to the religious community.

In the 1930s, Dolomon (Shlomo Yitzhak) SCHONFELD became the community's rabbi, running a yeshiva for a few dozen students. The community also maintained a Jewish school, one large and two private small bet midrash (Houses of Study) and a mikva (ritual bathhouse). Zionist organizations, such as Mizrachi and Hashomer Hatzair, were active in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Rabbi Ahron Zvi KESTENBAUM replaced the retired Rabbi Ignác SCHWARTZ and served as dayan (judge) in Vylok before the war. He prayed in the Hassidic Beis Medrash and was killed in Auschwitz. His father Avraham Yaakov KESTENBAUM served for many years as the towns shochet (religious slaughterer). He is buried in Vylok.

Vylok was under the jurisdiction of the Nagyszőllős Rabbinate. The Nagyszőllős rabbi was Rabbi Shmelke KLEIN (d. 1873) succeeded by his son, Rabbi Pinchas Chaim KLEIN.
