"Hitler decreed in 1940 that the northern part of Transylvania be returned to Hungary. Soon, Hungarian soldiers and Gendarmes marched in to "liberate" the territory. New civil servants and school teachers arrived and the language of the administration and of teaching was changed to Hungarian right away. A new Medical Officer of Health was appointed and he immediately declared the village swimming pool unsanitary and out of bounds to Jews, to the chagrin of many."
The Years 1941-1943
"Many new laws were enacted that affected the Jews of Valea lui Mihai (Érmihályfalva). Following is a partial list of them:
Jews were no longer to be admitted to universities. Jews could no longer hold liquor licenses. Jewish men, 20 to 50 years old, are to be called up to serve in labor brigades attached to the National Army. Boys, aged 12 to 18, are to report for municipal labor one afternoon each week. They are to be employed for road sweeping, snow clearing, road construction, etc. At the Olympus movie theater: dogs and Jews are not admitted. Jewish teachers are restricted to teaching in Jewish schools only. Jewish lawyers are no longer allowed to represent their clients in court. Jews are no longer allowed to sell tobacco. Jewish farmers must surrender the bulk of their harvest to the state. Jewish doctors may treat Jews only, except in communities where there is an insufficient number of Christian doctors."

The Events of 1944
There were multiple groups deported from Nagyvárad to Auschwitz-Birkenau in late May 1944 and following is the sequence of events for two groups as remembered by George WHITE and Veronica/Vera (née SOLOMON) HECHT from Valea lui Mihai, survivors of the Holocaust.
Group events for George White
"March: A troop of about twenty German soldiers were stationed in Mihályfalva. George WHITE relates that one of the officers was billeted in his home. We had little interference from him except when he decided to give a dinner party for his fellow officers on the occasion of Hitler's birthday and my mother had to cook their meal." "April: All Jews must wear a yellow Star of David on the lapel of their jacket when appearing in public." "May 11: Some of the Jews in Mihályfalva were directed to assemble in the synagogue and to take with them about one week's supply of food. Later in the day we were taken by train to Nagyvárad where we joined Jews from other communities in a large lumberyard." "May 13: The more prominent members of the Jewish community, including Géza FISCH and my father, were taken into town and tortured to make them reveal where they had hidden their jewelry and other valuables. They were returned to the lumberyard after the jewels were found and confiscated." "May 19: We were packed into a train consisting of cattle cars. Standing room only, destination unknown." "May 23: On a Friday, we arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau."

George WHITE was in Birkenau until early December 1944, then he was transferred to Auschwitz I. He was evacuated from Auschwitz I on 18 January, 1945, just a few days before the Russian Army liberated it. Today, George WHITE lives in Canada.

~ The Uprising of the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz-Birkenau ~ 1944
Following is a historically significant account by George WHITE who was in Auschwitz-Birkenau and through his father, Dr. László WEISZ, experienced the events leading up to the bombing of the crematioria in Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Sonderkommando (Jewish special labor task force assigned to work in the crematoria). George WHITE's father was a member of this group of Jewish men working in the crematoria. The testimony below describes the events that proceeded the bombing of the crematoria and the murder of the men involved, including George WHITE's father.
George WHITE and his friends Laci HONIG, Feri Junger, Imre GROSSINGER and Pista GROSZ survived the Holocaust.
"The Uprising of the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz-Birkenau, 1944" Copyright ©2009 by George WHITE, Canada - Auschwitz-Birkenau, June 1944 - "Instructions were relayed this morning that all the doctors were to assemble next to one of the Blocks. The rumor had it that the doctors will be employed to look after the large number of young boys that have by now accumulated here in 'D' Lager. With this possibility in mind my father, Weisz László, joined the other doctors on parade. After a while Mengele came and scrutinized them very closely, as if he was looking for familiar faces. After this inspection they were marched away and assigned to a different Block. I was not too alarmed because I believed the rumor that they were going to act as care-givers and I would soon see my father again." - Later in June - "Tonight the roll call lasted extra long and we were all getting very restless. The young Block commandant (Blockäldester), a Polish Jew, came over to talk to a group of us. He told us how he was brought to Auschwitz a couple of years ago and how hard they were made to work to build this camp. He pointed out to us the buildings with the chimneys from which we had often seen smoke rising, and told us that they were crematoriums and that next to them were the gas chambers. We just would not believe him. We thought those buildings were where the laundry was done, after all, they were also close to the building where we had our shower and got issued with our striped uniforms. We just could not believe that anyone could just murder old people and children by the thousand as he was telling us. We were convinced that he was just telling us this so that we would be scared and behaved ourselves." - About mid-June - "My father came to see me today. He told me that he has been assigned to the Sonderkommando (special task-force) and their job was to sort out the belongings taken from the people on their arrival in Auschwitz and to get them ready for shipment to Germany. It appears that they will be coming back into 'D' Lager periodically for a rest so I will be able to see him every now and then. He showed me how he was able to smuggle in some gold by burying it inside a chunk of bread. He used the gold to bribe somebody to be able to get out of the Block he was in so he could come to see me. It was wonderful to be able to see my Dad again. He brought me a small parcel of food, and another one for my mother, which I was to get to her when I had the chance." - Later in June - "Imre came rushing up to me this afternoon: "Come, your Dad is back in the lager, he wants to talk to you". So we ran to where he told Imre he was going to wait for me. When we got there we found him talking across the barbed wire fence to a friend of his: Friend: "Tell me, is it true that we no longer have grandparents or children?" Father: "Yes, it is all true. Friend: "Have you actually seen among the dead any of your friends or relatives?" Father: "Just don't ask .... So, Feri was right after all. My grandparents, my Uncle Géza and Aunt Paula, my Aunt Lili and her two lovely children, Gyurika (8) and Juditka (4)...., they are all dead now for sure. Gyurika, who was like a little brother to me, always following me around and imitating me in everything I did. What did we do to deserve this?" - End of June - "I managed to make contact with my mother again. I asked her if she knew what my father was doing. She burst into tears and told me that father had to remove the gold teeth from the people that were gassed. I feel terrible for my Dad that he has to do this kind of work, he who spent his life trying to take care of people's dental problems, he who took such great care of his hands to make sure that they were always perfectly clean and odorless, he who would never do anything that might strain his hands and cause it to shake. And now he is made to work on cadavers!" - Later in July - "Tried to contact my mother over in 'C' Lager, but she is no longer there. I found out she had been selected to go on one of those transports to a labor camp. I wonder what kind of work she has been assigned to. At least she is no longer living in the shadow of the crematoriums. (*3)" - Late August - "We have been placed under quarantine. Our Block is locked, none of us are allowed to go outside, and there are two doctors inside the Block with us. Some of the boys have been reported to have some sort of an infectious disease. Our rations of food are distributed inside, we have to use the three indoor toilets, and we do not go out even for roll calls. It is hot and stifling inside during the day and we are all very restless." - A few days later - "This afternoon, one of the Blockäldester's deputies sought me out and took me to a room at the back of the Block and there was my father. I never expected to see him while we were in quarantine, he must have bribed somebody to be able to come inside the Block. His face was distorted with pain; he was obviously very worried about me. I tried to reassure him by telling him that I was feeling fine, and that we were told that if any of us got seriously ill we would be taken by ambulance to the Hospital in the city of Auschwitz. Dad asked me to go and fetch one of the doctors so he could talk to him. They talked for a few minutes and afterwards my father seemed to relax a bit. Perhaps our infectious disease is not as serious as he had imagined." - Late September - CONDEMNED TO DIE - "There are now close to three thousand boys of about my age housed in three Blocks where the Gypsies used to be. Mengele admitted us into Auschwitz, but the factory managers do not want us to work for them, they do not consider us strong enough. This morning we were all assembled on the parade ground at the top end of 'D' Lager. Somebody had erected two poles with a bar across the top of it. We all had to march under it and those whose head did not touch the rod are sent to the left and to the nearest Block where they are immediately locked in. We all know what their fate is going to be. My friend, Gabi, who was my roommate when I boarded with the Ganzl family in Nagyvárad, and his younger brother, are amongst the condemned. It is ironic, Gabi is a year older than I am, but he is a bit shorter. And just because he is an inch shorter he will have to die. I sought him out in the 'death Block' and managed to talk to him through the wall. Gabi asked me that if I did survive I am to find his parents and tell them about how he and his brother died together." - About a week later - "Once again we were assembled on the parade ground. This time we had to strip off our shirts and walk past Mengele to show him what physical condition we were in. On this occasion about half the boys were sent to the 'death Block', and the rest of us just about filled another Block. Miraculously, my little group of friends, Laci, Pista, Feri, Imre and I, are still together. Perhaps we are to be spared after all." - Early October - - Early October - Our turn has come - "Day one: This morning, after our wake-up call, we were told that we are no longer allowed to go outside. We all knew what that meant, and there was a lot of wailing and crying. In the afternoon, the deputies distributed 4"x 6" cards to each one of us, and we were told we had to fill them out, stating our name, address and next of kin, as indicated on the cards. Each card was stamped diagonally across: GETOTEN. Just in case any of us might have any doubt as to our impending fate. In the evening, the Blockäldester and his deputies all got drunk, and spent the night singing and hollering in their quarters. The only song they seemed to know was: "Roll out the barrel, we shall have a lot of fun...", at least, they kept singing this tune over and over." "Day two: I spent the day reading passages from the little Book of Prayers my father had given me. I feel the need to pray at this time, but I do not understand what I am reading, or even if I am reading an appropriate passage in the book. I wonder if my Dad was looking for me amongst the dead boys in the two previous groups that have just got exterminated. He must have gone through agonies seeing all those boys gassed and wondering if I was amongst them. I decided to write him a message in my Book of Prayers, he might just find it amongst our discarded belongings. What a tale I will have to tell my acquaintances when I will finally get back to Mihályfalva! That is stupid; I won't be around to tell the tale... I wonder what it is like not to be; I try, but I just can not visualize the world without me in it. As I try to visualize some familiar scene, I can not disassociate myself from it, I am always part of the scene." "Day three: We woke up to a wet, overcast day. Sometime during the morning we were told to line up in the passage leading to the front entrance. For some peculiar reason, many of the boys rushed forward to be at the head of the line as if something nice was about to happen. I felt in no hurry, and ended up near the end of the line. Soon, some SS soldiers arrived, and about half the boys in the Block were marched off. A little later, the rest of us were marched over to another Block which had no bunks in it. We were lined up five deep and we were encircled by SS soldiers and their guard dogs. Because originally I was at the end of the line, I was now standing close to the open entrance door. I kept staring at the SS guard standing a few feet away from me: he looked very young; probably he did not even have to shave. I was thinking: here is this young fellow, of my own age group, about to escort me to my death, and yet, in different circumstances, he might have just been a fellow student in my school. All of a sudden, an SS officer arrived, riding a bicycle, and went up to the leader of our guards, and spent a few minutes talking to him. After he departed, we were marched back to the lock where we had spent the previous two days. When we got back here, we just sat in a daze, not quite believing our good fortune to have been spared at least for now. We did not really now what happened, why we were spared, and whether it was for good or just a delay. About an hour later, the first group of boys, who had already been taken to the gas chambers, returned. My friend, Aci, was in this group, and when I first laid eyes on him his face was as white as chalk. He told me that they were already undressed when the SS officer caught up with them and halted the proceedings. The boys had to parade in front of him to show that hey were still physically fit, and then he told them that there are to be no more exterminations as a result of fresh orders from Berlin." - Late October - "We heard an explosion from the direction of the crematoriums followed by gun shots. It appears that the Sonderkommando had rebelled. (This actually happened on the 7th of October.) They must have used some of that gold that they handled to buy some guns and explosives. Later, we learned that some of them did get away, but the majority was captured. Feri watched the members of the Sonderkommando being brought in to 'E' Lager to be locked onto one of the Blocks. He says he saw my father amongst them and as going to call out to him, but my father put his finger across is lips, signaling Feri to keep silent. I don't like to think bout how my Dad died and the kind of life he had during the last our months of his life. (*6) (Feri did not tell me this until sometime in 1997.)" - Mid October - "We are now in 'E' Lager. The trains have stopped coming and he camp is largely empty. We are being employed to clean and tidy up various areas of the camp; we are removing garbage, weeping floors, piling up bricks and so on." - End of October - "Today we were marched out to the crematorium area on clean-p detail. We had to gather up all the pieces of brick and other debris lying about. We could now see the remnants of the gas chamber that got blown up and the steel doors of the adjoining crematorium ovens."
