Welcome to Skalat
(Third cousins
Betty Lee Hahn and Israel Pickholtz)
Abandoned Synagogue
The Skalat cemetery was flattened and is now a soccer field.  In one corner we found a pile of about fifteen gravestones.  When we suggested to the mayor that he do something respectful with them, he asked if we were offering to pay the workers.
Approaching the memorial.
The edge of town is in the background.
The memorial is located in a field
where most of the killing took place.
His Honer the Mayor of Skalat.
He happened by while we were inspecting the pile of gravestones on the soccer field.

We asked him if there is some kind of list of Skalat Jews who were killed in the Holocaust.  He does not have such a list, but he has a list of Skalat soldiers killed, which includes some Jews.  He promised to send us a copy.  We are still waiting.
