Strabychovo Religious

~ Religious Life ~

About 60 Jewish families resided in Strabychovo. The shochet (ritual slaughterer) of the village was Rabbi Simcha BUXBAUM, who also served the nearby villages of Goronda and Znjatyne. He was murdered in Auschwitz. His father, Avraham, was the shochet in Tisa-Eszlar, and was one of the accused in the infamous Blood Libel trial which took place in Tiszaeszlár in 1882 and for which he was imprisoned for some time.

Another respected member of the Strabychovo Jewish community was Leibush Yehuda ACKERMAN, son of Naftali Simcha ACKERMAN. He owned the mill and was wealthy. In an article written by Wolf FRIEDMAN, grandson of Leibush Yehuda ACKERMAN, he states: "Leibush would give oil and flour from his mill every week to poor families, so they could bake challahs for Shabbes." Naftali ACKERMAN's tombstone is shown below (Naftali Simcha ben Yisrael Z"L d. 27 Cheshvan 5673).

Leibush Yehuda ACKERMAN's daughter, Zissel, was married to Naftali FRIEDMAN (see image below) and her tombstone is shown below (Zissel bat Yehuda ACKERMAN d. 28 Tishrei 5678). Naftali FRIEDMAN was deported to and murdered in Auschwitz.

Leibush Yehuda ACKERMAN was murdered in Auschwitz on 4 Sivan 5704 (26 May 1944) along with his second wife, Shprintza, and other members of his family. His first wife's tombstone is shown below (Chaya Feiga bat Yehuda Arye Z"L d. 30 Sivan 5676).

Strabychovo had a synagogue, mikvah and cemetery, which served the town's Jewish commumity.

Jewish families living in Strabychovo, and probably the surrounding communities, used the Strabychovo cemetery as the final resting place for their loved ones. Following is a general map of the cemetery location, satellite view and cemetery/tombstone photos.

In the documents section of the "Other" tab, you will find a link to a U.S. Commission Report completed in 2005 ("Jewish Cemeteries and Synagogues and Mass Grave Sites in the Ukraine"). This cemetery, as well as many other village cemeteries, are not documented in that report.
