Sredneye Religious

~ Religious Life ~

The congregation was organized in 5570 (1810) and the synagogue was built in 5585 (1825).

The first known Rabbi of Sredneye, Rabbi MENDELI, passed away in 5600 (1840) and then Rabbi Menachem (Ash) EISHTATER succeeded him, until 5605 (1845) when he left from here and went over to Chust and Ungvár.

Rabbi Yacov Yechezkia GRUNWALD became Rabbi of Sredneye until his passing in 5629 (1869), when his brother-in-law, Rabbi Shulem ADLER, succeeded him as Rabbi of Sredneye. Rabbi Shulem ADLER was born in the year 5607 (1847), in the village of Bodanush, in vicinity of Margeraten. When his father passed away, he was brought up by his mother's brother, Rabbi Hillel LICHTENSTEIN, the famous Rabbi of Kolemei (his mother remarried to Rabbi Yehuda (Ash) EISHTATER, Rabbi of Sobrance). He married the daughter of Rabbi Yitzchok Aizik BILLITZER, the Rabbi of NagyIda when his sister's husband, Rabbi Yacov Yecheskia GRUNWALD passed away, he became Rabbi of Sredneye.

Rabbi Shulem ADLER authored Sefer Rav Shulem (shown below). The sefer was printed after his death by his son-in-law, Rabbi Eliyahu SHTERENHEL, who was also a Dayan (Judge) in Sredneye.

After Rabbi Shulem ADLER died, his son, Rabbi Menachem Yehuda ADLER became Rabbi of Sredneye, but only for a short time. After the passing of Rabbi Menachen Yehuda ADLER, the above mentioned Rabbi Yitzchok Aizik ADLER became Rabbi of Sredneye when the town became part of Czechoslovakia.

When Rabbi Yitzchok Aizik ADLER passed away, the rabbinate of Sredneye was divided into two orthodox congregations and his son-in-law, Rabbi Naftuli Menachem ADLER, the son of his uncle, Rabbi Yoev ADLER, became Rabbi of Sredneye and his son, Rabbi Chaim Nuchem ADLER, became rabbi of the outlying towns and villages surrounding Sredneye.

Both Rabbi Naftuli Menachem ADLER and Rabbi Chaim Nuchem ADLER perished in Auschwitz.

~ Sredneye Cemetery ~
(also known as Seredne Cemetery)

Jewish families that lived in Sredneye, and possibly other nearby villages, used the Sredneye Cemetery (also called Seredne) as the final resting place for their loved ones. After you turn off the Mukacheve/Uzhhorod highway onto the road leading to the village, the Sredneye cemetery is located on the left, to the right of a transfer station. Following is a general map of the cemetery location, satellite view and cemetery/tombstone photographs.

In the documents section of the "Other" tab, you will find a link to a U.S. Commission Report completed in 2005 that attempted to document Jewish Cemeteries (and Synagogues and Mass Grave Sites) in the Ukraine. This cemetery, as well as many other village cemeteries, are not documented in that report.
