Tracing Your Family

The following three steps are the foundations for beginning your family research using the extensive resources of JewishGen:

     Step 1    Register with JewishGen.
This will allow you to search  the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF), The Family Tree of the Jewish People (FTJP),  and to have access to other websites and databases on JewishGen.
Click here to register with JewishGen:  "I'm a new user and want to register"

Step 2    Submit family surnames to the JewishGen Family Finder.

Wait for JewishGen's  email confirmation of your registration,  which will notify you of your JewishGen identification number  (JGID #). Keep your JGID #  and  your password by your computer.  Then, submit your family surnames from Rzeszow, Poland and  other towns to the Family Finder. You will see options  for displaying  your name. If you choose to show your name online, you may get more inquiries from possible cousins (which is desirable).
Click here to submit your family surnames to JGFF:  SUBMIT

Step  3   Search the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) to learn if  anyone has registered your family surnames
                      from Rzeszow and nearby towns.

You can search 3 different ways.  Read the explanation of choices after you click "Search".

Search City of Rzeszow birth and death records in the JRI-Poland database.

After reading the instructions and information here about the records, click on the link to the JRI-Poland database (below).

The Rzeszow entries appear in three sections:

Births 1842-1866 *
Deaths 1842-1901
Births 1866-1900

    * A booklet of the entire 1842-1866 Births database is available. Sorry, no individual records may be requested.  For information, contact Eden Joachim.

It is advisable to make several searches. Here are some tips on how to search the records:

  • First Search
    1. Type surname
    2. Select: Exact spelling
    3. For "Geographical Location",  select: Lwow Wojewodztwa
    4.Click SEARCH
Search all of Galicia on a subsequent search, by selecting "Galicia"
Search surname by "Sounds like" to see variations in spelling that may appear.

Before you search the JRI-Poland database using the link below, please read this important facts about Jewish records:

    ·  The records for many towns have not yet been indexed. The indexing of records cannot be started until a genealogist volunteers to lead the indexing project for a town.

    ·  The records for some towns do not exist, or have not yet been located.

    ·  The records for very small towns may appear in the index of the larger nearby town.

    ·  Many children were registered with their mothers' maiden names. Due to Galician marriage restrictions, many children will be registered with their mother’s maiden name, and an indication of an illegitimate birth.  Many of our ancestors had only a religious marriage, not a civil one.  The Galician laws only allowed for recognition of the marriage and subsequent births as legitimate if the parents had been married by the government appointed Rabbi and paid for that privilege. This held true for many years, so a child’s surname in the records, may be the maternal grandmother’s surname, used by the mother, because her birth was not recognized as legitimate, either.

    ·  We are awaiting information regarding the existence of Rzeszow
    marriages.

    ·  Each year the Rzeszow Archive will index the records that have reached 100 years. This may be delayed if the Archive falls behind schedule, and if those of us who are tracing our families fail to meet the fundraising goal of JRI-Poland's Rzeszow Archive Indexing project, which pays the Archive to index the records. (Poland's privacy laws require that records that are less than 100 years old cannot be made public. However, records less than 100 years may be ordered by writing to the Civil Records Office. A sample letter for writing to the Rzeszow Civil Records Office will be placed on this website soon.)

Click Jewish Records Indexing - Poland to search the database (will open in a separate window).

Eden Joachim in New York leads the Rzeszow Indexing Project for JRI-Poland. If you have a question regarding the Rzeszow records, you can write to Eden. Please include specific information when you write, such as the searches you have made, and the exact location. It is helpful if you specify the exact source of your searches, such as JewishGen, JRI-Poland, the Routes to Roots Foundation, the Ellis Island database, and other sources that you have used.

You
may contribute any amount to an indexing project, but each project has its own qualifying contribution. This is the amount necessary in order to acquire the Excel spreadsheet.  The spreadsheet is the index to the records that are located in the archives.  Once you have the Excel spreadsheet you will be able to sort it in various ways.  You will find family groups, ancestors you didn’t know about, and recognize relationships previously unknown to you. And the Excel spreadsheet  becomes available to qualified contributors months before the
data is added to the searchable online database.

For more information on obtaining the Rzeszow Excel spreadsheet, contact Eden Joachim. Please write "Rzeszow Excel file" for your subject.
