Hill Fort

Hill forts are the most scenic and telling testimonies of Lithuania’s history. These fortified earthworks are a common sight in Raseiniai district. Some of them can be caught by a traveller’s eye even from far away, but most of them are hidden among forests and on river banks, covered with trees and bushes.

KALNUJAI (Palendrių)  Hill Fort

Situated 5 km south of the city of Raseiniai, Kalnujai Hill Fort served as valuable stronghold for the people of Raseiniai. It was built on a natural elevation and can been seen from afar when travelling along Kaunas-Klaipėda highway. It can be reached via the highway by taking a turn toward Jurbarkas.

Due to its fine shape, the hill is called Napoleon’s hat. At the top of the hill fort, there is a 27-meter long triangular oblong site. In the far southeast part of the site, there is a 2 m high and 11 m long rampart. The hill fort has steep slopes of about 10 m in height. The hill fort overlooks a scenic view of the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Kalnujai hill fort may date back to as early as the end of the first millennia . The hill was used when battles with the Crusaders were commonplace, in the period when the hill fort was the site of wooden castles.
