Modern town and country: Piatra Neamt, Romania |

Note: I managed to photograph 68 tombstones and sent them to be uploaded on JOWBR. These photos (above) of interesting headstones, and a number of others, are displayed, with translations and details, on JOWBR (Jewish Online Burial Records) on JewishGen: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/ Above: The old cemetery, closed in 1860, is quite hard to find - it is almost hidden behind the large hospital near the center of the city. To his credit, our guide "Gigi" (Sebastien Traciu) was determined to find it for us and did so – triumphantly. To get to it, you have to pay the parking attendant to enter the hospital parking area and then find a narrow laneway to go behind the hospital. There is an old, decorative concrete gate surrounding the cemetery. The cemetery is surrounded by a barbed wire fence. Some of the stones are broken or have fallen over and the cemetery itself is full of overgrown plants and vines, rendering it inaccessible. |
