Jewish Cemetery
(click on photos for larger versions)

The old Jewish cemetery was expropriated by the Communist authorities in 1948; burials were barred seventeen years later, in 1965.
After 1965, Roma families occupied one-third of the cemetery site, creating a "village" by building their homes among the tombstones.
Headstones were used both as building material and as furniture!

A few years ago a large national and international task force recovered and restored many cemetery headstones;
unfortunately, Rabbi Gedalja's tombstone was not recovered.

The following link connects to a database containing information on the burials of several hundred people in the Niš Cemetery.
Because the database is large, it has been divided into four, seven-page sections, stratified by surname and plot location.
