Acres Plowed

The following tables are based on data found in a memorandum written sometime after October 1924 by Max Belenky, a Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) agent who traveled among Jewish Colonies in Ukraine where he trained Jewish farmers in the maintenance and use of tractors purchased by the JDC.

The JDC was established to provide food and money to the people of the Ukraine who were suffering from droughts and from the disruption of World War I and the Russian Civil War. In 1924, a spinoff of the JDC, the Agro-Joint, was created to specifically help Jewish farmers in the Crimea and Ukraine. This aid took the form of farm machinery, seeds, and training. Read an article about the JDC.

Mr. Belenky states that one-hundred-thousand acres of land were plowed and planted by Jewish farmers using JDC tractors as of October 1924. To read his memo, which contains additional information, click here.

By 1934, the Jewish Settlements appear to have become viable enterprises, with the help of Agrojoint. The settlements were maintaining vegetable gardens, vineyards, fruit trees, and poultry. This Agrojoint memorandum from 1934 provides insight into the extent of the farming operations in various Ukrainian districts.
