~ The Holocaust in Eger ~

In 1941, the population of county Heves amounted to a total of 325,421, of which, there were 7,053 Jews (2.2% of the total). Most of the Jews lived in two cities, Gyöngyös and Eger. At this time, Eger's population was 32,482 of which there were 1,787 Jews (.55% of the total). In the district of Eger, one of the six districts of Heves county, the population was 52,004 with 487 Jews (.01% of the total).

The 1939 general elections of the Arrow Cross Party obtained 36% of all votes in the city of Eger, the administrative center of the county Heves. After the enactment of the anti-Jewish laws, their decrees were put into force, making the economic and social existence of Jews impossible—even though these decrees greatly undermined the war economy and society. The Jewish members of the local legislative committees were gradually removed and Jewish-owned land was expropriated. Major companies tried to fill up the management with Christians.

The labor service, a form of forced labor, became a new way of humiliating Jews. In the summer of 1941, after Hungary had entered into the war, individuals, most of them Jews that participated in the revolutions, were considered untrustworthy and were deported to the Kistarcsa internment camp. One of them was Jozsef HELLER, a 57 year old lawyer, who was accused of enemy propaganda because he was a Zionist and a Freemason. In July, Jews from all over Hungary who did not possess Hungarian citizenship, were arrested and turned over to the Germans. They were eventually expelled to Kamenets Podolski, Ukraine where they were executed. LÖWENBERG, a tailor from Eger, together with his family, 5 persons all together, were among the deported. The LÖWENBERGs had been living in Eger for decades, but they were unable to obtain Hungarian citizenship. They succeeded to escape at Tiszabábony and reentered Hungary, but they were then seized and taken back out of the country again and eventually executed.

On 2 April 1942, the newspaper, titled Eger, reported on the yearly convention of the Baross Alliance held in Budapest. The Baross Alliance had been established in order to force the Jews out their economic positions. A group of the Alliance from Eger, headed by Kálmán PETRÓ, a member of the Hungarian Parliament, took part at the convention as well. The most important targets of the Alliance was reducing Jewish rights, assigning distinctive billboards for Jewish companies and forcing Jews to use their earlier names. The newspaper also reported on the group's own convention on 8 February 1943. The convention was opened by prebend abbot Jenõ FRINDT. György KISS, a textile whole-sale owner and secretary of the Alliance, pointed out in his speech, that the "Baross Alliance's work is nothing else but a counter-revolution in order to break Jewish capital and its influence."

Jewish merchants were banned from selling in market places. According to a decree issued in July 1942, by the alispán (deputy head of the county jurisdiction), Jews were not allowed to buy food either in shops or in stores before 9 a.m., which proved to be an extra punishment during wartime supply difficulties. The draft call of Jewish men for labor service caused supply difficulties in trade, handcraft and medical care. Immediately after, on 19 March 1944, the Gestapo appeared in the county of Heves. They set up their headquarters in the Grassalkovich mansion in the city of Hatvan. The dispatching of regulations concerning the Jews was mandated to Gyula SZABÓ, the alispán, and SZIBERTH, the aljegyzõ (deputy head of the county administration).

At the end of March, 1944, all telephones were revoked from the Jews. Out of a total of 630 telephones, there were 550 (87.14% of the total) owned by Jews. Dr. Lajos FISCHER, the president of the Jewish community, along with several merchants and intellectuals were imprisoned in an internment center in Budapest. The commander of the Eger city police issued an edict on April 5th requiring Jews to surrender all radio sets. At end of April, the head count of the religious Jewish community "Status Quo Ante" amounted to 748. Jenõ POLÁTSIK, a wholesale business owner, was the president and Zoltán RÁCZ served as the rabbi of the community. By the end of April, 116 Jewish owned shops of were closed down. The city mayor gave permission to the representatives of the local Baross Alliance to record and take any stock locked up in Jewish owned business. (Those inventory records are maintained in the county archive.) On April 19th, eleven sentences were pronounced, each with a fine of 30-300 pengõ (Hungarian currency) each, for the failure to wear the required yellow star badge. The lawyers Dr. Béla ALFÖLDI and Dr. József PRESZLER were among the convicted, the latter was also fined an additional 150 pengõ for listening to radio broadcasts.

On 5 May 1944, a decree issued by the alispán was published in the city newspaper that announced forced relocation of the Jews into a ghetto and the creation of the Jewish Councils. The decree also ordered an inventory of the personal property left in the homes. In the county of Heves, 6,601 Jews were relocated into the ghetto, of which 1,620 Jews were from the city of Eger and 352 Jews from the Eger district. In an agreement with the municipal authorities, the ghetto area for the local inhabitants was established in the center of Eger. Another ghetto was established for the inhabitants of the districts Eger and Heves, in a partly populated mining area of Bagólyuk, nearby the village of Szúcs.

At first, the camps were controlled by the local authorities, but later, control was transferred to the magyar királyi tábori csendõrség (Hungarian military police). The alispán of the county assigned the brick factory in Kerecsend as one of the locations for the county concentration camps. A so called consultatory organ for Jewish issues was established by the Ministry of the Interior in the city of Hatvan. This consisted of Germans, whose decision was authoritative concerning to the interpretation and completion of the related decrees. Colonels Márton ZÖLDI and László FERENCZI, of the military police, cooperated with the consultative organ. The heads of the municipal authorities held regular briefings with the representatives of the military authorities and leaders of the police.

The inhabitants of the ghettos in Bagólyuk, Eger and Tiszafüred were transported to the brick factory in Kerecsend and loaded into cattle cars at the railway station in Maklár. The leader of the camps in Bagólyuk and Kerecsend was Pál POLGÁRY, the infamous fõszolgabíró (highest ranking of iudex servientium (an elected body of the local jurisdiction), and known for his extremist views.

The archbishop of Eger, Gyula CZAPIK, protested against the deportation of the Jews to the prime minister, Döme SZTÓJAY, to no avail. The archbishop sheltered 40 Jews from Nagyvárad in his palace. An army officer, Captain Kálmán HORVÁTH, during his visit of the ghettos of the district III of the military police, enlisted several thousands of over-aged men for labor service, providing them with more chance to survive.

According to the census of 1941, the settlement names and the head counts of all inhabitants, including the Jews in the county of Eger, were as follows:

A committee of five persons determined the ghetto area in Eger: Lõrinc HEDRY, fõispán (head of the county's jurisdiction), Gyula SZABÓ (alispán), Pál POLGÁRY (fõszolgabíró), József ZSÁKAY (Police chief) and István KÁLNOKY (city mayor). They were also responsible for controlling the ghetto. Mayor KÁLNOKY was asked to retire and his successor Endre PÁL, was appointed on May 27th. The rapporteur on Jewish issues at the municipality was István PAPP (a city counselor).

The relocation of the Jews to the ghetto was completed on 15 May 1944. All 1,620 Jewish inhabitants were moved to three locations. Originally, a greater area had been approved, bordered by the Gólya street, a part of the Káptalan, Újvilág and Vadász streets, the Szúnyog-köz, the Dobó square, the Harangöntõ, Mecset, Torony and the Uszoda streets. A couple of days later, some of the houses were omitted from the original list to leave a smaller area. Four to five families were forced together in one flat. Jews who had converted to Christianity and married couples of mixed religion, about 16-18 people, were placed in a separate house on the Herczeg timber-yard. Alfred SARLO was appointed their leader. The ghetto area was enclosed by a two meter high wooden fence, the windows looking outward were nailed up and were whitewashed.

The members of the Jewish council were: Jenõ POLÁTSIK, whole-sale owner, Béla LÕW bank manager, Jenõ BALÁZS, Jenõ KUNOVITS, Mór FRANK, Ignác BRAUN, József GROSZ and József FISCHER (lawyer). It was characteristic of the atmosphere that on May 15th, three graves were opened in the Jewish cemetery of Eger, because it was suspected, on filed charges, that valuables might have been hidden there—nothing was found. Personal searches were performed in the ghetto several times, first on May 23rd and led by the financial authority. The persons who carried out the personal search and the supervision were appointed by the head of the Authority, Géza HODONSKI and the city mayor. The confiscated objects and cash were recorded in a protocol by a dedicated committee set up for this purpose. The valuables were taken to the buildings of the Minorite Order. During the personal search, all dwellers of the ghetto were standing on the ghetto yard the whole day long, including sick and aged persons, among them, the 94 year old rabbi. Pál SZERENCSÉS, a police detective, was especially fervent during the search. The Gestapo assigned several people to uncover hidden valuables. Captain Kálmán HORVÁTH enlisted about 200 men from the ghetto from the under-aged or over-aged generations at end of May. Before Kálmán HORVÁTH arrived, about 200 young men were forced marched to the brick factory of Kerecsend, where they were supposed to prepare the area, so they lost their opportunity to be enlisted in the labor service. The young people were locked up by the military police in the brick furnaces for night.

On June 7th, one day before their movement to the concentration camp in Kerecsend, the ghetto had to suffer another humiliating personal search. The rich men were tortured, the women, including those having had a recent childbirth and the virgins were searched by maternity nurses, causing them physical and psychical injuries. No valuables were found during the personal search.

On June 8th, the haggard people were ordered to the brick factory of Kerecsend and forced to march there, a distance of 16 kilometers. There they were held without shelter in the pouring rain and spent the night in the furnace pits. At the entrance to the camp, a gallows was set up as a menace, ordered by military police First Lieutenant PAPP. The military police shot several people in the nearby forest. From Kerecsend, the people were again marched to the railway station at Maklar, a village a distance of 10 kilometers. The 94 year old rabbi of the orthodox Jewish community, Simon SCHREIBER, who had been working in Eger for 64 years and was unable to walk by then, was carried on the road in an armchair by his followers and family members.

On June 9th, the Gestapo removed the severely ill persons from the hospital and, led by a captain, delivered them to the railway station of Maklár to be put in the cattle cars. Among them were small children with contagious diseases and patients waiting for surgery. A physician named CSÁSZÁR from the village of Egercsehi, together with his family, attempted and failed to commit suicide. The Germans took the Christian dwellers of the ghetto as well. Only a single Jewish patient remained in the hospital of Eger. An 86 year old disabled woman was killed during a bombing raid in October.

Very few persons, out of the 1,620 who had been deported to Auschwitz, have ever returned. A number of men out of those who had served in the labor service were killed in Russia due to the tortures of the keret (soldiers commanding the slave laborers) and during the 1943 retreat, or later of typhus. Yet, in their proportions, more Jews survived in the labor service. Several of those who had been hiding were eventually executed by the paramilitary groups of the Arrow Cross party. János RÓTH and Erzsébet KLINGER had been hiding in Eger, but they were betrayed and arrested. On June 30th, two girls and a boy hiding with forged documents were captured. On July 30th, Mrs. Pálné BOROS was arrested. All of them were transported to Miskolc and eventually deported to Germany.

On 15 October 1944, Major József Herkey KÕNIG convened a meeting of the board of officers in Eger and issued the command: "all deserters must be captured and hanged." Checkpoints were set up, headed by First Lieutenant Pál POLGÁRY, Officer cadet Imre SZÁNTAY, Sergeant István ADAMECZ and Sergeant-major Ferenc HORVÁTH. The captured soldiers and those enlisted in labor service were taken to the city hall of Kerecsend where they were beaten and plundered.

Dr. Endre SZÉKELY, a medical doctor, and his family were not interned together with the other Jews of Eger, because he had gone blind at the military service during World War I and, according to the legal regulations at the time, they were entitled to being exempted. After the Arrow Cross party had overtaken power, the family was taken to the jail of the public attorney of Eger and later turned over to the military police headquarters of Füzesabony. Dr. András KUN escaped from the labor service and wanted to hide in his sanatorium, but he was recognized, betrayed and dragged away together with the SZÉKELY family and other captured deserters of the labor service. They were ordered to dig their own grave in the forest near Kerecsend and murdered by shots in the neck. They were found later lying on their faces with mangled sculls and limbs broken while they were alive.

The only published newspaper in Eger reported the atrocities on November 4th, after the execution of the family SZÉKELY, citing the official news bulletin of the Hungarian News Agency (MTI): The World War I veterans, handicapped in 75% degree, decorated with one gold and two silver medals, were entitled to immunity together with their families, even according to the Arrow Cross government. Nothing could make their claims valid in a time, when the most extreme emotions were broken loose. The order for the execution was given by Pál POLGÁRY, the earlier fõszolgabíró, who meanwhile became member of the army—it was the highlight of all his activities. On November 9th, Imre STEINER, who had escaped from the labor service, was taken from the police custody to the Arrow Cross headquarters and he was there beaten to death. The Russian troops entering Eger found Gyula BRAUN hanging from a tree on Kossuth square. There was a plate in his neck reading: "This is the fate of all runaway Jews."

The murdered were exhumed on 19 March 1945 and buried in the Jewish cemetery of Eger under worthy rituals. All together, 26 bodies were found in the animal cadaver cemetery of Kerecsend and in the nearby forest.

There were still some, first of all members of the labor service, who, having had escaped from the war, succeeded to find shelter from people, who risked their own life to hide the refugees. Sándor LÉNÁRD was hidden by the widow BALOGH and László DEBRECENI, a carpenter. Gyula PRESZLER escaped from the labor service together with a couple of his friends. They asked a soldier to dub himself as their custodian on the train going from Putnok to Eger. They got off at the "Várállomás" railway station and fled outward into Vécsey valley. The soldier betrayed them later, but the deserter succeeded to hide despite the subsequent manhunt.

Several sources reported about the tragedy of a labor service company unit of Jewish intellectuals, medics, engineers from the counties of Heves and Borsod. On 16 October 1944, the company were stationed in trans-Danubian Pusztavám when SS troops and members of the Volksbund marched in the village. Eye witnessed by the village population, 217 people were murdered by the troops, among them Dr. Imre SÁNDOR, Dr. Jenõ SZABÓ, Dr. György GRÓSZ, Dr. Imre ENGLÄNDER, Dr. János GYÁRFÁS, Dr. Zoltán LENGYEL, György PÁNCÉL, medics and pharmacists, and Endre VÉRTES, Imre VONA, Endre SÁRKÁNY and Miklós FISCHER, engineers from Eger.

None of the deported children survived. In 1946, a memorial was inaugurated on the yard of the Jewish school; currently it is located in the Jewish cemetery. The Jewish community "Status Quo Ante" and its institutions were reorganized by survivors of the labor service. Jochanan SCHREIBER, the grandson of Simon SCHREIBER, was among the survivors; he was elected the rabbi of the community and served from 1945 to 1949. In 1949, the "Status Quo Ante" community in Eger amounted to only 294 persons; Lajos KRAJ being their president. In 1950, Rabbi Jochanan SCHREIBER immigrated to Israel and founded a Yeshiva named Yeshiva Erlau."
