Isaac Sklarawitz married Anna Arbitman circa 1905;  Anna was my grandmother, even though the family kept it as a secret from me until I was finally told in 1975, over 40 years old.   She was born circa 1885 in Lukashevka, Ukraine-Russia, about 15 miles from Isaac's town of Dashev.  She married Isaac in Dashev circa 1905, even though the 1910 US Census lists their marriage year as 1904.   Anna's life in America was relatively short and not notable;  it took her death on August 30, 1921, to elicit publicity, as the Hartford Courant had a news article detailing her suicide in which she turned on the newly installed gas lighting, without igniting them -- Anna suffocated herself using gas.   Family stories indicate she had a serious illness and Anna heard neighbors talking of how painful it would become.

Anna Arbitman's family included:

CHANE KUSHNER-KUTLARSKY -- Anna's mother -- Born in 1857 -- Traveled to America in 1909 at age of 55 years -- Died ten days after arrival -- Her manifest listed the Medical Center at Ellis Island noting that she was senile.

Chane's manifest caused some confusion at Ellis Island, as family names were originally written in as Kuschner, then crossed out and Arbitman listed.

KHAIM-MEER ARBITMAN -- Chane's husband -- Born circa 1852 -- Died circa 1920 -- Included in the 1907 Kiev Gubernia Duma Voting List as:
Son of Berkov -- Jewish property owner -- Pays 100 rubles in taxes -- Living in Lukashevka in Lipovets District

The Duma Voting list also has the names of Avrum-Nakhman Arbitman, son of Mendelev, and AvrumItsko Arbitman, son of Yankelev.  These were cousins of Khaim-Meer.

MINDEL CUTLER -- Chane's mother -- Born circa 1829

MORDECCHI BENNI KUTLARSKY -- Mindel's father -- Born circa 1800

The children of Chane and Khaim-Meer Arbitman, besides Anna, were Teyva (Tauble), Ruchel (Rose), Freyda, and Benjamin.

TEYVA (TAUBLE) ARBITMAN -- Born circa 1875 -- Married Yehudah (Leib) Klaman (Climan) circa 1894 -- Traveled to America in 1904.  Children were Pincus (Fred), Ida, Barney, and Herman (Hy) -- Died in 1960

RUCHEL (ROSE) ARBITMAN -- Born circa 1890 -- Traveled to USA in 1909 -- Married Isadore Cohen (Cayer) circa 1912 -- Children born were David Morris, Meyer, and Anna -- Naturalized in 1944.

FREYDA ARBITMAN -- Born in the late 1800s -- Lived in Ukraine -- Daughter Eva

BENJAMIN ARBITMAN -- No information available -- Died at age 12.
