1.  The title of this document was handwritten in Polish script, while the list of the fifty-three names was handwritten in old German cursive script.  return
2.  In most cases in this school record the name, occupation, and city of residence of the student’s father were listed.  However, in one case the name of the retired grandfather was substituted, in seven cases the name of the mother was listed (presumably the father was deceased), and in three cases the student was an orphan and no parent was listed.  return  
3. This is a literal translation.  Possibly this referred to 4th grade students in 1890 who were due to be graduated in 1892 or 1893, in which case this would probably be a school with six grades.  This meaning is, however, uncertain.  return

1.  The initials k.k. are abbreviations for the German words Koenigliche and Kaiserliche, which meant royal or imperial.  This referred to the Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1890, Franz Joseph.  He was also the King of Hungary and King of Galicia.  return
2.  The very precise notation of the time of day, 9:33 a.m., was an indication of the importance attributed to the request.  return
3.  It was impossible to decipher from the old German handwritten script whether the name of the school superintendent was Feuwin or Teuwin.  return
4.  Religious instruction was an essential part of study in school.  Jewish students who lived among Christians would have been equally required to take a religious class of their faith.  return
5.  Girls attended separate schools from the boys.  return
6.  The four persons listed as signatories were apparently either faculty members of the Girls’ Gymnasium or the board members of the Brody School Advisory Committee, as surely the names of students in a 4th-year class would never have been used to approve the candidacy of such a distinguished teacher.  return
