Berehove Cemetery Views

~ Berehove Cemetery ~

Jewish families who lived in Berehove and probably the surrounding communities used the Berehove Cemetery as the final resting place for their loved ones. The cemetery is located 500 meters from the local town cemetery, with the entrance gate located on Byn. Tomaш Мiгaя (Tomash Mihaya str.). The GPS cordinates are: 48°12'32.77" N / 22°39'25.78" E.

The cemetery is bordered by a fence and walls with 1,895 tombstones (as of 2013) and the cemetery is very well maintained. Caretakers of the cemetery live nearby the cemetery.

~ Berehove Cemetery After Restoration ~

Following are views of the cemetery after restoration.

In Appreciation: Starting in 2003, after decades of neglect, Joseph VAYS, USA and Hugo GUTMAN, USA (and Berehove) funded and led the effort to restore the Berehove cemetery, to honor the memory of all loved ones buried there. Today, they are seeking individuals with a connection to this cemetery or anyone else interested in helping to fulfill the mitzvah of maintaining it. Their goal is to continue funding this project so that the cemetery remains in its current condition. If you are inspired to help financially in this most noble effort, click HERE to contact Joseph VAYS in the USA or click HERE to contact Hugo GUTMAN in Berehove.

The Aron (Traditional Casket)

photo

It is a Torah commandment to return the body to the earth upon passing, as it it written "Unto dust shall you return" (Genesis 3:19). Our sages teach us that this means placing the body directly in the ground with no casket. After preparation of the deceased for burial by the Chevra Kadesha (Burial Society), the Aron [pictured above] was used to transport the deceased to their final resting place. In Israel, placing the body directly in the ground—with no casket—is still a prevailing custom. In America, most, if not all states, mandate the use of caskets by law.
